“Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you’ll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo’s clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list).
With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house “spark joy” (and which don’t), this international bestseller featuring Tokyo’s newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home—and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.”

So I am continuing my journey to “happiness” and my new “lifestyle” by tackling see url the category that I love but was SUPER disorganized…my DVDs & CDs! I am a HUGE music and movie lover and I haven’t, so far, been able to transfer all of my music to some digital format. Yes, I have a Kindle, iPad, mini iPad, Galaxy Note phone and a Samsung tablet or two but there are times you NEED the disk (like in the car maybe, right?!) and it seems risky to store everything you have spent your hard-earned money on up in some cloud….so I am not on board YET with doing a total purge of my DVDs and CDs!
I don’t think I have EVER gotten rid of any CDs or DVDs in the past so I had lots to go through. I also at this time went through software and other “things” stored on disks. This category was stored all over my house. Bins in the basement, on my CD rack, on my dvd rack, in my car, etc…
It took me about 1 WEEK to COMPLETELY do this purge and I know it sounds crazy but I had around 60 disks with things burned on them I had to go through by putting each one in my computer and seeing what was on it, transferring files I still wanted, etc…ugh!
Then I went through the DVDs which was a much quicker process, I was able to determine what brought me joy quite quickly, BUT I ended up with about 10 DVDs that I insisted on watching before I discarded them, lol! So over that week I watched them while working on this project. There are several companies online that purchase DVDs but you only end up getting about 50 cents per DVD (IF they take them). So you are really better off selling them as a lot on Craigslit or simply donating them.
When it came to music most of the CDs brought me joy. The ones I wasn’t sure on I listened to a minute or two of before deciding. Software was pretty easy – most of it went!
The BEFORE + AFTERS
On the left is our DVD rack and also bins of CDs, disks, software and movies to go through (and our kitty Cosmo). On the right is now JUST my husband’s stuff! It doesn’t look like much changed but since taking all of MY DVDs out of there he can now store all of his video gaming disks (Playstation 2, 3 & 4) as well as some of his books on tape. So now this is just HIS area and he will hopefully decide to go through it at some point.
Here are all of MY discards! Music on the top and DVDs on the bottom!
And, finally, an AFTER of MY stuff!! Now I have all of my DVDs, CDs, and Software stored in one place!
The top 3 pics shows the music, books on cd and movies I kept.
The bottom pic shows how they look NOW – in their new storage boxes!! I am in LOVE with these boxes (more on them below)!
WOW…this I feel went very well! Please watch the video below for full comments but I am really feeling this KonMari Method is working! I can also say I will NEVER store these items in different areas again. If I get a new CD or DVD (which is doubtful) I will immediately put them into my new storage system!
Total Items: 417 !
Total Keep: 242
Total Discard: 175
So that means I got rid of 42% of my STUFF!!
To further break it down, here are the numbers by category…
CDs – Total = 233, Keep = 166, Discard = 67 – These were donated to the Salvation Army
DVDs – Total = 184, Keep = 76, Discard = 108 – I sold these on Craigslist to one guy for $50
I didn’t include software and things burned in disks in the count, but if I had I would have exceeded 50% for sure!
I am LOVING the KonMari Method…it is much easier than I thought it would be and it is really helping me focus on what I want in my life!
Next purge will be Picture Frames! Keep checking back to see my progress on my purges!
Storage Systems Used
Here are the FABULOUS movie sleeves I found where I was able to store 100 DVDs in that small pink box (see pic above)! This is a great way to protect your movies, keep the cover and reduce storage space!

Here are the CD Holders I found to store CDs, books on CD, software, and things burned on disks! Each box holds around 100 disks and each sleeve (which is included) holds 2 disks.
