The Amazon Description of the book:
“Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you’ll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo’s clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list).
With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house “spark joy” (and which don’t), this international bestseller featuring Tokyo’s newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home—and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.”
A little about the author:
“Marie “KonMari” Kondo runs an acclaimed consulting business in Tokyo helping clients transform their cluttered homes into spaces of serenity and inspiration. With a three-month waiting list, her KonMari Method of decluttering and organizing has become an international phenomenon. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is a best seller in Japan, Germany, and the UK, with more than two million copies sold worldwide, and has been turned into a television drama for Japanese TV. She has been featured on more than thirty major Japanese television and radio programs and in the Sunday Times, Red magazine, You magazine, the New York Times, USA Today, NPR’s Here & Now, Slate, Family Circle, and the London Times, who has deemed her “Japan’s preeminent guru of tidiness, a warrior princess in the war on clutter.””

My Coats & Accessories Purge!
So I am continuing my journey to “happiness” and my new “lifestyle” by tackling some items I had stored ALL around the house! In Marie Kondo’s book she says you should complete one CATEGORY all at once, so ideally I should have done my dresser, two closets, and brought up my coats and accessories. But, I think Ms. Kondo didn’t know just how much STUFF I have, lol!
I did see her state in a blog that if doing one big category all at once seemed overwhelming you could create sub-categories and work on it that way. So that is what I did. I purged my Coats, Hats, Scarves, Gloves, and Belts in this purge.
It took me about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to complete this project so I feel that this sub-categorization is the best way for me to complete my clothing since it is such a HUGE category for me.
The BEFORE + AFTERS
I pulled all of my Coats, Hats, Scarves, Gloves, and Belts from around the house (I even had some in the trunk of my car) and piled them all on the bed to begin the sorting process.
After 1 hour on the project everything is sorted! The DISCARD pile is on the LEFT and the KEEP pile is on the RIGHT.
Here is a SIDE by SIDE showing the before and after!
Hats, Scarves, and Gloves Before + After (and my BELTS are in the closet)
Here is a pic of where my Coats are going to be stored….I know it looks a little scary now. I had to SHOVE them in my closet in the other room but when my purge of Hanging Items is complete everything should look nice in that closet.
WOW…this I feel went very well! Please watch the video below for full comments but I am really feeling this KonMari Method is working! I never thought I could get rid of so many COATS!
Total Items: 87
Total Keep: 45
Total Discard: 42
So that means I got rid of 48% of my STUFF!!
To further break it down, here are the numbers by category…
Coats – Total = 26, Keep = 11, Discard = 15
Belts – Total = 5, Keep = 4, Discard = 1
Hats – Total = 19, Keep = 8, Discard = 11
Scarves – Total = 25, Keep = 17, Discard = 8
Gloves – Total = 12, Keep = 5, Discard = 7
I am sure I could narrow these categories down even more but I think this is great for now AND I was able to donate 2 large garbage bags of coats and accessories to the Salvation Army!
I can’t wait to dive into the HANGING items in my 2 closets, but I am EXTRA scared about doing those as I LOVE clothes! Keep checking back to see my progress on my closets!
